torsten goods - thank you baby!

You like “swing” singers but, just like me, you can’t stand Michael Bublè? Then maybe Torsten Goods might be just right for you.
This singer and guitarist from Germany, in addition to being a great vocalist, also boasts a guitar technique that closely reminds of the way George Benson plays.
The track selection is excellent and the album as a whole is rather amusing. It’s easy music but trust me, while in the shower  it’s a spanker.

Sumrrà - 6 mulleres

“Aversion to women is worldwide and does not concern the Arabic culture alone. I think about the Christian front, about the so-called “family values” with a double standard;  the  deeply rooted idea of imposed virginity, the so-called honour killings, the cultural falsification, about physical and psychoogical violence.”
                                                NawalElSaadawi

With this album the Spanish trio Sumrrà is paying a tribute to six women that are leaders of the feminist movement. There’s so much awareness in this record hanging in the balance between glee and tragedy, with all emotional strain oriented towards those who rose up and fought against history’s archetypes.
While listening to this album I thought I could seize all the dignity that distinguished the lives of these women in search of justice. There’s reverence, sadness, beauty and dignity enclosed in these awesome six tracks. I hope that listening to them will make you want to know more about the lives of these women who truly had prominent roles in our history.

Ólafur Arnalds - Re:member

I was indeed pleasantly surprised by the new album by this Icelandic young composer. His music unfolds between northern landscapes and subtle atmospheres, never loosing poignancy; the use of electronic music features is at no time prosaic and the intimate feel many tracks have unveil the depth of his talent.
The arrangements in the balance between pop, rock and jazz allow aural pleasure even after several listenings.

Snarky Puppy - we like it here

Many bands record live tracks, but what does it mean?
To play and record directly without any post production that would adjust volumes, change sounds and so on.  Snarky Puppy must have questioned: what’s the sense of a live recording if you have no public?
This is how “We like it here” was conceived, a true concert-record masterpiece where  improvisation always   flows naturally with a vigorous horn session, a powerful rhythm section and top-notch soloists.
It’s nearly impossible to label their music as they can skillfully blend different musical genres. An endless source of energy that cannot possibly tire the listener.
This texan group moved to New York to write a new chapter in Jazz Music.

Snarky Puppy - Culcha Vulcha

Among those bands that are capable of combining music of different descent and origin a special place must be granted to Snarky Puppy, a musical collective based in New York lead by bass player Micheal League.
One of the permanent band member is of course Cory Henry, a multifaceted keyboard player with a huge musical taste ranging from jazz to soul, reaching ethnic sounds such as afro-funk and even indian music impressions. Drummer Larnell Lewis deserves a special mention as well, being one of the rising new stars of the last ten years, having played before with the incredible Roby Botos (soon on this blog).

The band’s latest effort, Culcha Vulcha, only strengthens what I thought: great imagination and the ability to blend jazz-rock and mercyless funky with lively mastery.

After “We like it here”, this is yet another jewel added to our collection.
